Want to be part of a group that offers you an opportunity to learn more about boating, take courses in seamanship, piloting, navigation and other subjects, spend time in providing a valuable public service and meet other boating enthusiasts?

You may be interested in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. As the civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard--with 35,000 members from coast to coast--we provide all those things and more.

You can enroll in a series of courses covering almost every aspect of serious seamanship, and—if you're willing to undergo further training—qualify to help teach boating safety classes, carry out safety inspections of recreational boats, serve as crew [or even commander] of on-water boater-assistance patrols.

If you're interested in joining the Auxiliary, we'd love to get acquainted. We meet every third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Providence Center, at 370 Shore Acres Road, Arnold, Md., just off College Parkway.

Here's a map showing how to find us:

For further information, please e-mail either Al Stringer, Flotilla Commander, or Darren Fox, Vice Commander. Give us your name and your daytime and home telephone numbers or e-mail address. We'll be back in touch soon.

HOW TO GET THERE: Drive to the intersection of U. S. Route 50 and Maryland Route 2. Drive north on Route 2 for 2.8 miles to exit marked College Parkway. Get into right-hand lane immediately when you see sign at right reading ``Big Vanilla Athletic Club''--the exit ramp begins right there. Turn right onto College Parkway and drive 1.6 miles to intersection with Shore Acres Road. Turn left onto Shore Acres Road and drive less than one-tenth of a mile to Freshfields Lane. Turn left onto Freshfields Lane and then right into the first driveway you see, about 50 feet from the intersection. That's the Providence Center. Look for a parking-space. Enter the building through the door at the right.
